February. The shortest month
We have landed in the shortest month of the year, which means that January (a month of (admittedly dashed) ambitions and, for many, Dry January) is over. We end the month with a stormy performance by Corrie so that means going into the new month with fresh air!
Have you ever thought about what a month actually means to you? A thought that came to me while writing this newsletter and because I have many associations with January, but remarkably less with February. Do I see it as a month of love because of Valentine's Day? A month of winter sports? A quiet month that I don't dwell on too long, but experience as a start-up to spring?
"Februum"
February gets its name from the Latin word februum. What are you saying, you wonder? I admit it immediately; this is knowledge previously unknown to me, but the world-wide web brought clarification. "Anything that sanctifies or purifies is a februum," is how Censorinus of 238 A.D. describes it in "De Dei Natali. A good month to do a big cleanup, for example. Shake up, clean up everything and go for it (again).
Go for it! The Beach Boys must have thought the same thing when they were here in 1973 to record their 19th album. The reason I'm writing this is because the cover of the album they released then, Holland, features our beloved Kromme Waal! What a discovery about KW9. When I think of the Beach Boys, I think of warm summer days by the sea, of sand with a blue sky above it and melting popsicles. Not immediately of an album about winter. But maybe that's exactly why they called it "Holland"... Nevertheless, I did feel a summery and cheerful atmosphere on the streets last days. With the relaxations in the hospitality, sports and cultural sectors, people are moving again! I feel the Good Vibrations because Holland is open! And so is KW9; I'm curious to hear your ideas for events, trainings, breakfast/lunch sessions, book presentations. What would you like to organize?
I thinkGood Vibrations is a great association to add to my own 'February'. Let's go & lets flow! Appropriate for KW9 because we have fun activities planned AND we are launching a new corporate identity this month. More about that later in this newsletter.
A fun little exercise for you if you recognize my February feeling: think of some fun, positive, beautiful feelings that give you energy and stick them on February. If we surf into this February full of those thoughts, it should be a great month. Wouldn't that be nice?
NEW || KW9 art collab: Studio Dee @ KW9
Wie is zij?

NEW || Logo and corporate identity KW9
In addition to new art in the house, we've been getting creative ourselves with the development of a new KW9 logo. And we are proud to present to you not only a new logo but also a new corporate identity and website. A style that symbolizes connection, inspiration and growth. The why and what behind these new shapes and colors? I'd like to share a piece of my personal vision for KW9 with you:
"I feel KW9 is an extension of my personal purpose in life. It exists to nurture growth, on individual and business level. How do we nurture growth? Let's turn to nature for a bit. Growth starts with rich soil. With nurturing grounds. Underneath the surface the roots of plants and trees are super connected. Those connections below lead to growth and blossoming of the ecosystem above the surface. I hope to give the people that visit KW9, 'the seeds', their rich soil to ground, to grow roots deep, so that they can develop and blossom as themselves (yes, you!). Delivering impact below, above and beyond.
KW9 a space to work. A place to meet. Your home for connection, creation and growth in work & life."
In the coming period, the website will be updated a bit more and the new corporate identity will also be introduced on the invoice, in the mail and on social media. We hope it appeals to you and you like it! Do you have questions about this or do you want to talk to us about it? Feel free to respond and send an email to info@KW9.nl.
Tip from Flip! An Oriental outing with our Asian neighbors: Geisha
The column in this newsletter in which I take you on my personal neighborhood discovery trips. Where should you go? What can you see, taste and experience in KW9's neighborhood?
Sometimes you have those places where you feel like you're really far away, even though it's not that far away at all. Do you recognize that?
I had that experience at the restaurant Geisha next door at Prins Hendrikkade 106. They call it a 'fusion of various cuisines from Asia where traditional recipes are presented in a modern way'. I call it mostly: very tasty.
What I like about Geisha is the choice of different small dishes as well as dim sum so you can taste as much as possible of the diversity of Oriental cuisine. It ranges from Japanese kobe beef to Chinese peking duck. And from cocktail to saké (rice wine).
Although I do recognize the word "Geisha", for example from Arthur Golden's book, I was curious as to where exactly the name comes from and why it fits a restaurant. Herewith a brief interlude of history; The history of Geisha's goes back to the seventeenth century. In the time before the Geishas there were the Saburuko, they were already present in seventh century Japan. The word Saburuko means "the one who serves." And the team at Geisha restaurant is very good at that; they think with you about what goes well together and help you put together a delicious menu.
A symbol of great value and one you would quickly walk past is the cherry blossom that stands in front of the entrance. The variety that stands in front of the door at Geisha can't quite be called "natural," but oh well; otherwise we wouldn't be able to enjoy cherry blossoms all year round. After all, cherry blossom is a delicate flower that can only be admired for a short period of time (2 weeks!). Like, for example, in the Amsterdam forest. The latter as a tip for a newsletter later this year...
Mainly for Japanese, the cherry blossom is an important tree. The cherry flower (Japanese name: Sakura) is seen as a sign of a new beginning of bloom, as a beauty of short duration. And because the bloom is so short, the blossom period is celebrated in a big way. They do this in the hanami season, where [hana] means "flower" and [mi] means "watching." The hanami season is seen as a new beginning for the school year and work year. And who wouldn't want that; to step into a new season, so to speak, after a busy work day by having a bite to eat at Geisha!
